I am going to be completely honest....I love the way water marbling looks but DAMN it's hard to do.  I still can't recreate the same pattern over and over again so my nails match. Of course, it also doesn't help that I am impatient and pull my finger out without checking to make sure everything is cleared away and if there are bubbles to slowly take them out.  I get excited and want to see the design.  I sometimes pick out the perfect area to then mess up getting the awesome design on my knuckle.  Anyway, so let's go over this craziness.

The first thing I do is try to find some polish that is really going to pop on my nails.  I picked Salon Perfect Yowza Yellow and Finger Paints Pink Perspective.   I saw something similar to this on Instagram and I just had to try and recreate it. Something with the bright pink and the highlighter yellow just screams summer to me.   So I figured I would try my own mix.  I have never tried these two brands for water marbling.  I usually will make a bulls eye and try it out first to see if it will actually show up and spread like it is supposed to on the top of the water.  I tried it with these polishes and they did okay.  It's hard to see the yellow but that's why I paint my nails white first.

I always paint my nails white to ensure the best eye popping color.  For the white polish I use Funky Fingers Gesso. It's super opaque and you will only need one coat.  I have had to add a few drops of polish thinner to the bottle just because it can get a little thick.  I picked up this polish from Five Below.  I have mentioned this before but I might as well keep saying it because I feel that everyone should save their money on basic color polish, something that you might use each week.  Why buy expensive polish for that.  If you are going to use a white base you really want one that isn't going to take nine coats to make it opaque.  Funky Fingers is made by the same company as Color Club and Fresh Paint.

You will have to forgive the messy design because I seriously suck at this...I am not going to lie.
The polishes that I picked for this worked okay.  Keep in mind that you will use a lot of polish just because you place several drops in the cup for each bulls eye.  I don't use filtered water but I know a lot of people swear by it but I guess my tap water is pretty good.  You can try and double up and dip two fingers in the cup.
Here's my attempt at water marbling. I am adding some other pictures of my attempts.

I know they aren't that great and I will keep trying it out until either I get the hang of or get completely pissed off to where I throw crap around the room, yelling profanity.  I know there a lot of people out there (I have watched them on Instagram) that rock at this. They do it without any issues.  I have tried different polishes, temperature of water, making sure my water is filtered, etc.  I used all sorts of tools to drag the image as well.  I was using a pin and then I tried a toothpick, a cuticle stick and now I use my water marbling tool from What's Up Nails.  You can use what ever is easiest for you.

Do you have any tips and tricks for water marbling?
